Wayne Hodell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center - South Jordan on Mar. 10, 2026.
With heavy hearts, but profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Wayne Joseph Hodell (80), who departed this world on March 6, 2026. Wayne was born on October 12, 1945, in the town of Murray, Utah, to the late Joseph Hyrum and Donna (Bateman) Hodell. He peacefully transitioned at home, surrounded by loved ones on both sides of the veil, after a courageous battle with illness.

A proud alumnus of Murray High School, class of 1963. Wayne's commitment to service began the day after graduation when he left for the National Guard. He served honorably for six years, instilling in him a lifelong dedication to community and country.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wayne was sealed for time and all eternity to his High School Sweetheart, Martha (Van Rij) in 1965. Their 60-year journey includes raising two children, Troy and Stacie and it is a perfect example of devotion and sacrifice.

Professionally, Wayne's career spanned 30 years with a company that would eventually become Nokia, where he supervised and installed central phone and cellular systems.

Wayne and Martha's wanderlust led them on many adventures in and outside the continental United States. However, their hearts were irrevocably captured by the breathtaking beauty of Alaska, a place they revisited often. He loved the Northern Lights and the beauty of its wildlife and landscapes. An avid adventurer, Wayne possessed what he affectionately called "Gypsy feet." His love for the open road and waters was evident in his ownership of dune buggies, ATV's, boats and motorhomes, each facilitating countless family adventures and creating memories that will forever be cherished.

Wayne was a humble man with a gentle spirit, known for his remarkable ability to build, repair, and maintain just about anything. He was the "go-to" person for countless friends and family members, offering insightful advice and assistance without seeking recognition. Wayne's attention to detail and meticulous workmanship were evident to everyone who had the pleasure of having him help. Everyone knew, "if Wayne built it or fixed it; it was done right!"

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; his children, Troy (Amy Yeates) Hodell and Stacie (Hodell) Day; his sisters, Gail (Hodell) Harbrecht and Kathy (Hodell) Orton. Wayne was the proud patriarch of seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, each being the best part of his living legacy.

He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Donna Hodell, brother-in-law DeWayne Harbrecht, brother-in-law Ronald Orton, and son-in-law Michael Day.

Wayne Joseph Hodell's life was a legacy woven with love, adventure, and quiet acts of kindness. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity and devotion, and he will be profoundly missed by all who know him.

The family invites you to celebrate Wayne's life with visitations the evening of Friday, March 13, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 pm and Saturday morning from 9:00-10:45 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (9750 South 2200 West, South Jordan, UT 84095) with interment at Murray City Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
