Celebrating the life of David Wayne Powell, beloved husband, father, cousin, uncle, Peepaw, and friend, born July 22, 1947, in Houston, Texas, to Carl and Dorothy Powell. Wayne passed from this life peacefully in his sleep on November 2, 2025, at the age of 78.
As a kid growing up in Denver Harbor, Wayne loved playing baseball, riding his bike, and hanging out with his friends until their moms called them in for dinner. Wayne graduated from Furr High School in 1966. On December 30, 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Jackie Strokos. He was drafted into the United States Army where he served stateside. Wayne began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1969 and retired from AT&T in 1999, after 30 years of service. During that time, he was a member of the Communication Workers of America, serving as District Steward.
After moving to Hardin, Texas, in 1979, Wayne was very active in the community. He always volunteered to be a part of anything his kids were involved in from coaching little league baseball, working at the concession stand or selling tickets at the gate for football games, serving as a member of the Hardin Band Booster Club, serving as a member and one time President of the Hardin Athletic Booster Club, to just being there to watch them march in the band or play football. Wayne was also a member of the Hardin Volunteer Fire Department from 1980 to 1989, serving one term as Assistant Chief.
In his retirement years, Wayne started up A-1 Tel-Com with his good friend Kay Lanier, sold his side of the business to work as an independent contractor traveling to Illinois, Louisiana, and Florida doing contract communications work, and even worked at Walmart for a few years. Once he finally settled into retirement, he spent most of his time hanging out with his grandkids, mowing his lawn, or just sitting on the back porch enjoying the breeze.
Wayne was a kind man with the patience of Job and the gift of gab. He always had a funny story to tell and loved telling tales of the past that usually started with, “I remember when 610 wasn’t even a loop...” That gift awarded him many friends and lifelong friendships along the way.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jackie, daughter Waynette Harp and husband David, son Craig Powell and wife Laura; grandchildren Christopher Walker, Megan Harp, Zoe Powell, Zachery Powell, Zander Powell, and Cooper Harp; great-grandson Kristian Walker; as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews that were dear to him.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Carl Elmer Powell, and Dorothy Katherine Kessler along with his brother Gary Powell.
