Wayne Burton Rumfelt, 88, of Marion, NC passed away peacefully on the morning of March 22, 2025 at the Mitchell House after a period of declining health. Born June 8, 1936, he was the son of the late Houston B. and Eursley Rhom Rumfelt.
Wayne began his professional life at American Thread quickly deciding that wasn't for him. After accounting training, he became a plant comptroller at Superior Cable in Hickory, Carter Weber in Hickory and Sanford and retired from OMC Burnsville as it's senior plant comptroller.
A gentle and easy going man, he was quick with a smile and kind word and only offered advice when asked. His love of automobiles began early in life when his sister Frances would let him borrow her car, probably starting when he was 12 or 13. He was a fierce Ford man all his life and gave the car bug, especially Mustangs, to his son and grandsons. He enjoyed nothing better than having the entire family go with him to car shows and swap meets.
Wayne was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Shirley Haynes Rumfelt, grandson, Cayden Wayne Rumfelt, and grandson, Lance Burton Neighbors. Also preceding Wayne was his brother, Fred and sisters, Frances, Joyce, and Mary.
Wayne is survived by his daughter, Patty Rumfelt Neighbors (Russell); his son, Gary Rumfelt (Angie); grandson, Russell Neighbors III; and granddaughter, Abbie Rumfelt Kelley (Colton). Two sisters also survive him, Jeanette R. Jarrett (Bill) and Janice R. Stevenson, sister-in-law, Marlene Rumfelt, a host of nieces and nephews and special first cousin, Cecil Rumfelt of Lexington NC.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. The funeral service will begin at noon with Pastor Steve Durham officiating. Entombment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
We give special thanks to the memory care unit of the Mitchell House in Spruce Pine for their outstanding care they gave our daddy and papaw. He truly could not have received better care.
