Wayne Shepherd Obituary

Visit the Mountain City Funeral Home website to view the full obituary.

Wayne Edward Shepherd, age 78, of Shady Valley, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family. Wayne was born August 25, 1947, in Addison, Ohio to the late Polly Wallace Shepherd. Wayne was deeply loved by his family and cherished by all who knew him.

Wayne was preceded in death by his mother Polly Shepherd, his father Samuel Hutchinson, and brothers, Hiley and Shelton Shepherd.

Wayne dearly loved his family, and although his walk with God began later in life, he became a devoted Christian and faithful member of the Crandull Church of Christ. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many peaceful days in the woods or by the water. Throughout the years, Wayne shared his life with many beloved canine companions, most recently Rocky and Otto, whom he cared for deeply.

Wayne was a hard worker all his life. Wayne proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 as an E-5 Kitchen Supervisor and earned the Sharpshooter Badge (rifle). Throughout his life he worked construction, masonry, factory work, and maintenance. He concluded his working years after more than 25 years of dedicated service with the Johnson County Board of Education, where he faithfully served as a custodian at Shady Valley Elementary School.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Glenda Rutter Shepherd; daughters, Cindy Arnold (Wayne) of Elizabethton, TN, Alicia Bauguess (Jonathan) of Mountain City, TN, and Sheena Murray (BJ) of Shady Valley, TN; 5 grandchildren, Evan Bauguess, Chelsea Arnold, Jackson Bauguess, Cooper Murray, and Abigail Murray; one sister, Janice Eller of Bristol, TN; special hunting and fishing buddy, David Wallace (Jeannie); and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 27th, at Crandull Church of Christ in Shady Valley. Visitation and viewing will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral at 2:00 p.m., with Tracy Dugger officiating. A graveside service will follow at Blevins Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Evan Bauguess, Jackson Bauguess, Cooper Murray, David Wallace, Larry Rutter, Billy Shepherd, Norman Hodge, and Nathan Hodge.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the men of the Crandull Church of Christ.

The family would like to give a special thanks to David and Jeannie Wallace, the Crandull church of Christ, Amedisys Home Health, Physical Therapy, and Hospice, Fresenius Kidney Care in Mountain City, Dr. Hess, Nikki Gentry, and the first responders with the Shady Valley Fire Department.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 141 Shepherd Lane, Shady Valley, TN 37688.

Condolences may be sent to the family through our website at www.mountaincityfh.com
