Wayne Junior Tilson, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, at Hospice Home in Alamance County, North Carolina, at the age of 93. Born on October 28, 1932, in Sugarfork Township, Wayne lived a life marked by dedication to God, his family, community, and work.
Wayne was a devoted husband to the late Marie Leopard Tilson, whom he married on February 18, 1950, in Oconee County, South Carolina. Together, they built a loving family and shared many cherished memories over their years together.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lennie and Bertha Tilson, and his beloved wife, Marie. Wayne is survived by his children, Michael Tilson and his wife Susan Coppola, and Teresa Roney and her husband Gary. He also leaves behind his brother, Clinton Tilson, and his wife Betty. Wayne was a proud grandfather to Ginger Roney, Margaret Witek, and James Tilson, and a great-grandfather to Marcus, Christian, Oliver, and Elsie. Wayne has a first cousin in Franklin, NC, Odell Bolick and his wife Helen. He has remained close to his surviving sisters in law, Eula, Hilda, Edith, Nancy and Phyllis.
Wayne's professional life was spent at Kayser Roth Corporation, where he dedicated over 30 years of service, rising to head three departments, including shipping. His commitment to his work was matched by his passion for the outdoors. Wayne found joy in fishing, hunting, camping, and woodworking, pursuits that brought him peace and fulfillment throughout his life.
A man of faith, Wayne accepted Christ at an early age. His grandparents, George and Inquabo Tilson, had donated land for the local Buck Creek Baptist Church, cemetery and school. Wayne attended school there, where he formed lifelong friendships and was surrounded by many first and second cousins with whom he hunted, fished and rode bicycles. These included future brothers in law Francis, Harrison and Owen.
Later in life he was affiliated with several baptist Churches in Graham, serving as a deacon and on building committees. His last church membership was at New Covenant Fellowship Church. He was also actively involved in his community as a Scoutmaster for Troop 161 of the Boy Scouts of America, where he mentored young men and instilled in them the values of integrity and service, as well as sharing his love for the outdoors. Much of his scouting work was shared with his dear friend and mentor, Earl Norris.
Of all his interests, second to his family, fishing was the closest thing to an obsession. In 2018 he set a goal of catching 1000 fish with the help of friends Jimmy and Lane. They exceeded that number by June. Wayne recently counted up the number of friends he had fished with who had died: it was 22.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, December 23rd, at 2 p.m. at the Piedmont Cremation and Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Graham Memorial Park. Wayne's family invites all who knew him to join in honoring his memory and celebrating a life well-lived.
Wayne Junior Tilson will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his steadfast work ethic, and his generous spirit. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of kindness and devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
