Wayne Unke Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 14, 2025.
Wayne Irvin Unke, 98, passed away peacefully on 12/13/25. He was born on November 8, 1927, in Fairmont, Minnesota, to Irvin and Lena Unke, a middle child in a family of eight siblings. Wayne was influenced by parental values of hard work and devotion to family, that would shape the course of his life. From his earliest days on the farm, he learned the importance of responsibility, thriftiness and caring for others. As a child of the Great Depression, Wayne carried these lessons forward, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Wayne attended Mankato State University, where completed his Bachelor's degree and participated in men's gymnastics, receiving many accolades for his skills as a gymnast. He later continued on to earn his Master's and Specialists degrees in educational administration. Wayne dedicated his working career to education at Wells–Easton High School, where he served as a coach (gymnastics, basketball, track) math and computer science teacher, and later as the high school principal. He was known for his leadership, his belief in the potential of every student, and his commitment to creating a school environment rooted in respect, learning, and opportunity.

He was a devoted father, grandfather and husband, and a good friend to others in need, volunteering with the Jaycees and Wells Lion's Club over the years. Outside of volunteering and the classroom, Wayne found joy in the outdoors. He loved fishing, skiing, tennis, world travel and spending time at the lake. He loved to debate/argue the topics of religion and politics with anyone anyone willing to engage. His easy laugh and patient wisdom of those debates will be deeply missed.

Wayne leaves behind a legacy of integrity and dedication. Those who knew him will remember not only what he accomplished, but the way he lived-with humility, generosity, and a genuine love for others.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean. Together, they shared over 70 years of love, travel, and family time. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Robert, Leo, Ronald, and sisters Eunice and Joyce.

Wayne is survived by his three sons and families of whom he was endlessly proud: Quinn, Garth (Deb), and Troy (Kari). Grandchildren Katharin (Ryan), Josh (Sarah), Taylor (Brett), Adam and Benjamin, great grandchildren Everett and Isabel, and younger brothers Willis and Roland, as well as, their families. A private family service will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family and Wayne would prefer that donations be made in the form of volunteerism in the community in which you reside. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
