Wendy Melissa Abernathy

Wendy Melissa Abernathy, age 61, of Durand, Michigan, passed away on February 2, 2026.

Born on November 22, 1964, in Flint, Michigan, to Richard and Juanita Dickerson, Wendy attended Durand High School and later obtained her GED. Throughout her working life, she was known for her strong work ethic, holding various factory positions ranging from machine operation to assembly work.

Affectionately known as the "cat lady," Wendy had a heart especially devoted to animals. She was deeply involved with Community Cats of Owosso, a group formed in response to the county's significant stray cat population. Working alongside the Shiawassee County Humane Society, Wendy helped the organization provide traps, carriers, guidance, and hands-on assistance with trapping, all in support of their mission: no more unwanted or unplanned kittens. Her compassion left a lasting impact on both animals and the people who shared her cause.

Wendy's personality was as vibrant as it was loving. She was goofy and a little spicy, yet endlessly sweet and selfless. She wore her heart on her sleeve and gave freely of herself to those she loved. Wendy found joy in gardening and yardwork, took great pride in decorating for the holidays, and poured her love into everything she did. Above all, she was a kind soul whose warmth was felt by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Andy (Kathy Davis) Dickerson; her cherished grandchildren, Amariya Maurer, Nova Davis, and Oakley Davis; her father, Richard Dickerson; her sister, Barb (Al) Edgeworth; her brothers, Wayne (Shannon) Dickerson and Tony (Stacy) Dickerson; as well as many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Dickerson.

A celebration of Wendy's life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Wendy's name may be made to Community Cats of Owosso.
