He was born on November 2, 1936, in Alexandria to Paul and Dorothy (McKissick) Savage and lived in Alexandria all of his lifetime. He was a graduate of Alexandia High School-Class of 1956. In his younger days, Dink worked at Ellis Gulf Station in Alexandria. He also delivered milk for Carver's dairy. He entered the United States Army in service to his country in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1965 following his reserve obligation. Later he became a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in rural Alexandria. Active in the Alexandria community, Dink was a member of the Varsity "A" Mens Club, the Alexandria Lions Club and the Tuesday Morning Men's Coffee Cup Fellowship. He was a fan of most sports including Indiana Pacers Basketball, IU and Purdue basketball. He bowled for several years and enjoyed coaching Little League baseball.
