Wilbur Herbert Johnson

1929 - 2024

Wilbur Herbert Johnson, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on December 31, 1929 in Alcester, South Dakota, Wilbur's life was a tapestry woven with love, adventure, and service, leaving a legacy that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. The son of the late Herbert and Lillie Johnson, Wilbur "Will" grew up with a strong sense of family and community, values that he carried with him throughout his life. He was the beloved brother of Mavis Wiggert, Gladys Giere, and Lorraine Sapp, all of whom predeceased him. Will's life was forever enriched when he married the love of his life, Carmen Luisa Baldrich Johnson. Together, they shared 63 years of marriage filled with laughter and love until her passing. They were blessed with three children, Deborah Kay Trimble (Michael), Becky Ann McIntyre (Glen), and Scott Spencer Johnson (Patricia Jewkes). Will found great joy in being a grandfather to Amanda Trimble McKinnon, Derek Reid Trimble, Lauren Paige Nakabayashi, Anna Elizabeth Ballard, Erin Lindsay Winterton, Glen B. McIntyre IV, Keanon William Johnson, and Colin Rhys Johnson and a great-grandfather to 12 great-grandchildren. Will's service to his country as 1st Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne during the Korean Conflict was a period of his life which shaped his character. His bravery and leadership were a testament to his dedication to the nation and its values. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the University of South Dakota and went on to have a fulfilling career as District Sales Representative of heavy construction equipment. An avid reader and lover of history, Will had an insatiable curiosity about military operations and strategies. His interests were as diverse as his personality, with a deep appreciation for Jazz music and a talent for singing bawdy songs with his distinct baritone voice that could light up any room. Will's love for travel took him to many corners of the world, where he indulged in his passion for good food and intelligent conversations. Those who knew him will remember him as a loving and adventurous soul. Interment to be held in the spring on a date to be determined.
