Wilfred Mere Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Labby Memorial Funeral Home - DeRidder on Oct. 22, 2025.
Wilfred Mere Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at the Rosepine Retirement & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on February 8, 1938, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Theophile Mere and Eva Kibodeaux Mere. Wilfred was a remarkable man whose life was filled with love, family, and joy.
Wilfred led a life that exemplified the values of kindness and community. He was often regarded as the unofficial Mayor of Bunddicks Lake, known for his outgoing personality and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. He never met a stranger, and his warmth and charisma drew people to him. Family gatherings were a cherished tradition for Wilfred, who loved to BBQ and celebrate special occasions surrounded by his loved ones.
For 68 wonderful years, he was married to the love of his life, Jeanette Anne Broussard Mere. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and commitment, serving as a model for all who knew them. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with laughter and support, raising a family that reflected their shared values.
Wilfred is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanette, and their two daughters: Janice Mere of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Janine Nevils, who is married to Donald, of DeRidder, Louisiana. He was a proud grandfather to Tara, Justin, Whitney, Josh, Jake, and Dylan, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Wilfred was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Taylor, London, Lillie, Addison, Madilynn, Eliza, and Delilah, who brought him immense joy as they carried on the family legacy. His beloved dog Lady was his life.
He was preceded in death by his son, Wilfred Mere Jr.; his sister, Louise Jones; his father, Theophile Mere; his mother, Eva Kibodeaux Mere; and his beloved grandchildren, Ashleigh and Courtney. His memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends, who remember him for his generous spirit and love for the outdoors.
Aside from his family, Wilfred had a passion for woodworking, where he created beautiful chairs and bird baths that will remain as lasting memories of his craftsmanship. He enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing, always appreciating the beauty of nature and the serenity it brought him.
Wilfred's life was a true celebration of love, community, and the simple pleasures of life. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder, Louisiana.
Wilfred's funeral will be held at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder, Louisiana, on October 24, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Consolata Cemetery in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The family invites all who knew and loved Wilfred to join them in celebrating his remarkable life, a life filled with love, laughter, and an enduring spirit that will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
