Wilhelmina Vollmerhausen Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 22, 2022.
Wilhelmina "Willa" Vollmerhausen, 91, born November 4, 1930 in South Ozone Park, NY passed away on February 16, 2022 in Bethpage, NY. Devoted wife of Otto, whom she married in 1951, preceded her in death along with her father Alfonse, mother Wilhelmina and brothers Elliott, Calvin, and Warren. Loving mother of Otto Vollmerhausen of Florida and Sister-in-law to Lois DeLauro of Wyandanch and an Aunt and Great Aunt to dozens of great and grand nieces and nephews and their children across the country. Willa began her career in an office on Wall Street and then worked in a real estate office when she moved to Hicksville. When her son was in grammar school she returned to work part-time and later to full-time for a graphics art distributor in Mineola. The owner of this business purchased several local newspapers and she became the billing and advertising coordinator, a position she held until her retirement in 1991. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and bowling in a senior league. She was an avid painter in her youth and won several prizes for oil paintings of landscapes. She also crocheted for families and friends and had some of her Afghans displayed at the Old Bethpage Village. For her work at the Bethpage Seniors club, where she held offices from secretary to President over a 20-year period, she received the Spirit of Senior Centers award from the Nassau County Executive for dedicating her time and talents, increasing the membership to over 200 and for always putting the well-being of others ahead of herself.
In addition to her work at the senior club, Willa was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she had loving, longtime friendships with many members of the congregation. She was a longtime member of the Dorcas Aid Society and the Altar Guild. She also worked on the Stewardship and Fellowship committees and the Call committee, when in 2006 she received the Christian Crusader Service Award from Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School. Wilhelmina Vollmerhausen was a warm, loving and caring individual. She was committed to her family, always standing up and showing up for weddings, christenings, family gatherings and funerals. She endeavored to reach the lives of others and was a real spirit of volunteerism in her community and her church. The family will receive visitors Thursday, February 24th, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Broadway, Bethpage. Funeral Service Friday, February 25th, 10 am, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Interment following at Pinelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Willa's name to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 449 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714.
