Willard M. Ety, a cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully at his residence on June 13, 2025, at the remarkable age of 103. Born on October 23, 1921, Willard was a lifelong resident of Carroll, Ohio, where he cultivated not only the land but also a legacy of love and dedication to his family and friends.
Willard led a fulfilling life as a retired mail carrier and a devoted farmer. His passion for farming was evident in the way he tended to cows, pigs, chickens, corn, beans, and hay, embracing the beauty of nature and the simple joys it brought him until 1973. His garden was not just a source of sustenance; it was a testament to his green thumb and deep connection to the earth. Even beyond his agricultural pursuits, he found joy in playing cards, especially the game of Euchre, where his keen mind and sense of humor could truly shine.
A man of strong Christian ethics, Willard was a guiding light in the lives of many. For over 60 years, he served as an adult Sunday school teacher, imparting wisdom and values to countless people. Willard's character was defined by his unwavering commitment to his family, who were indeed his proudest accomplishment. He and his beloved wife Marjorie shared 68 years of marriage, a bond that stood as a model of love and partnership.
He is survived by his children, James Townsend, Steven (Soozie) Ety, Cynthia (Charles) Woods, and Cathy (James) Tucker, who carry forward his legacy of love and values. Willard also leaves behind grandchildren Nicole (Jeremy) Johnson and Tom (Julie) Townsend, who fondly remember their grandfather's warmth and wisdom. His great-grandchildren Jessica, Tyler, and Ava Rapp, Maggie and Charlie Townsend along with great-great-grandchild Kingston Rapp, are a reflection of the family he cherished above all. In addition, numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and a wealth of nieces and nephews further enrich Willard's enduring legacy.
Willard is preceded in death by his loving wife, Marjorie Tipple Ety, as well as his parents, Andrew and Edna Reef Ety. He is also mourned by the memory of his daughter, Jean (Michael) Kelly, granddaughter, Jessica Woods, and his siblings, including infant Archie, Harry, Raymond, Russell, Olen, Alice Beatty, and Fred Ety.
Visitation will be held Wednesday at The Frank E. Smith Funeral Home in Lancaster, on June 18, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will take place on June 19, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Garden. Willard M. Ety will be deeply missed, but his spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of all those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
