William Franklin "Frank" Andrews, 88, of
Burlington, NC, passed away on December 14, 2025, after a courageous but brief battle with cancer. Born on September 29, 1937, in
Haw River, NC, Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll and Sally Mae Andrews.
Frank was hard-working and dedicated in every aspect of his life. He spent 39 years serving the Burlington Fire Department, beginning his career as a firefighter and retiring as Fire Chief. As chief, he strengthened the department through the creation of the Fire Explorer program, the opening of Station 5, and the implementation of the Honor Guard.
His commitment to improving his community extended well beyond the fire department. Volunteering was one of the many ways Frank set an example for his family. His work with the American Red Cross took him beyond the local level to New York City following 9/11 and to communities across the country in the aftermath of natural disasters. He was a member of the Amran Temple of the Shriners and a 32nd-degree Mason. Through his involvement with Amran, he became known as "Bingo" the clown, bringing joy to children at Shriners Hospitals and participating in countless parades-doing what he loved most: making people laugh.
Despite his many responsibilities, Frank always made time for his family and his passions. He was a man of kindness, helpfulness, and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He could fix anything-and if he couldn't, he would certainly figure it out. On any given day, he could be found working in the yard, browsing home improvement stores, or watching Carolina Tar Heel basketball. His love for the beach and Mexican food was something he shared with his children and grandchildren, leaving memories that will never fade. Margaritas, anyone?
The cornerstone of his family, Frank was a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years, Gayle; a loving father to Kim Andrews and Krystal Neil (Brian); and a doting grandfather to Riley (18) and Cooper (15). Riley will miss going out to eat with his Granddaddy, and Cooper will miss teaching him how to use electronics. Frank also leaves behind many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held on December 19, 2025, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in
Burlington, NC. No public funeral service will be held; a private family gathering to honor Frank will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Burlington Fire Fighters Benefit Fund.
