William Franklin "Bill" Appel III

William Franklin Appel III, lovingly known as Bill, passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on January 9th, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Bill lived a life marked by kindness and an appreciation for simple joys. He was known for his gentle spirit, warm presence, and the comfort he found in familiar routines and caring faces. Bill enjoyed time at home with his roommates, going out to eat, and volunteering at the cat shelter, which brought him great joy.
Bill is survived by his loving sister, Mary Kim Wilkens, and her husband, Rich Wilkens; his nieces, nephew, Brendan Murphy, Emily Schneider, and Kaela Murphy, along with their spouses and children and family member David Murphy.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Marion May Songer and William Franklin Appel II, and by his beloved grandmother, Emily Bell Songer. Bill was raised by the strong, devoted women in his life-his mother Marion, his grandmother Emily, and his sister Mary Kim.
Bill was deeply blessed by the compassion and dedication of his wonderful caregivers at The Arc of Howard County, who supported him with patience, dignity, and heartfelt care for many years. His family is profoundly grateful to The Arc of Howard County for the role they played in enriching Bill's life.
