William Edward Atkins, Sr., 83, of Palmyra, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, October 17 2024. He was a proud United States Army veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country. Bill had a distinguished career, having worked at General Electric and later retiring as a boilermaker.
Bill’s life was largely spent in the peaceful surroundings of the mountains of North Carolina, where he embraced the beauty of nature and cultivated his many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed fishing, had a love for women, classic cars and Bluegrass music. He not only enjoyed listening to music but also showcasing his talent by playing both the banjo and guitar.
He was born on December 18, 1940, in New Albany, Indiana to Ernest and Velma (Smith) Atkins. Along with his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son Eddie Atkins, and his sisters, Barbara and Della Mae Atkins.
Bill is survived by his children, Charles Atkins (Debra), Elizabeth Sanders (Steve), and William "J.R." Atkins, Jr.; his sister, Alice Robertson (Darryl); as well as eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation, which will take place from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with burial to take place at Edwardsville Cemetery, accompanied by military honors, reflecting the appreciation of a grateful nation.
