W. David Atkinson, a longtime resident of Fishkill, formerly of Beacon, passed away on October 16, 2025 at his home in Fishkill, New York. He was 84.
Son of the late William and Dorathy (Aldrich) Atkinson, he was born on March 13, 1941, and grew up in Beacon, where he graduated from high school in 1959. An alumnus of Clarkson University, he received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science degree in Industrial Management.
In 1963, David was commissioned as Second Lieutenant into the U.S. Army, Corp of Engineers and served during the Vietnam War era. He achieved the rank of First Lieutenant and was honorably discharged as a reservist in 1972.
As an engineer, David worked for Fluor Daniel Corporation and served as a facilities superintendent at various sites throughout the country including IBM in East Fishkill. He previously worked for Western Publishing, where he helped design printing presses. He retired in 2006.
He was an Eagle Scout, member of the American Legion, NRA, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and enjoyed hobbies such as bowling, model trains and photography, with specific interest in camera mechanics. As a knowledgeable handyman, Dave was always working on projects at his home and property and took great pride in assisting his sons with the construction and renovation of their households as well. More than anything else, he cherished his family, most especially as a grandfather.
In 1971, he married Geraldine (Geri) Poupore in Massena, NY. Geraldine survives at home in Fishkill.
Additional survivors include his sons and their wives: Todd and Sondra Atkinson of Hopewell Junction, Trent and Patricia Atkinson of Wappingers Falls, and Troy and Jessica Atkinson of Katonah; his grandchildren: Ty, Emilee, Harper, Hudson, Aidan, and Tema; his uncle, George Atkinson; countless members of the Poupore Family; and many other loving relatives & friends.
Calling hours will be held from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. A memorial service will take place in the funeral home at 12:30 pm. Immediately following at 1:15 pm, a memorial graveside service with Military Honors will take place at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306 (www.t2t.org).
