William Gilvin "Bill" Bates, 86, of Honea Path, SC, passed away peacefully at the Rainey Hospice House on May 13, 2025.
Born on July 4, 1938, in Gaffney, SC, he was the beloved son of the late Clarence Gilvin Bates and Sara Brown Wooten.
Bill was married to the love of his life, Linda Jane Hartsell Bates, for nearly 61 joyful years. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment and deep affection. Together, they raised three cherished children: Gil Bates (Kelly), Greg Bates (Casey), and Jenifer Bates Fleming (the late Craig Fleming). Bill was also the proud grandfather of 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa Bill." With such a large and loving family, his life was full of laughter, energy, and unforgettable memories-from chasing balls in the yard and carrying toddlers on his shoulders to giving wise counsel and gentle encouragement. He was a constant presence, admired and adored by all who knew him.
A hard worker with a deeply rooted sense of purpose, Bill mastered many roles throughout his life. He served honorably in the Army National Guard, worked with Vocational Rehabilitation, owned and managed Craytonville Grocery, raised cattle, and served as a Magistrate in Anderson County. No matter the job, Bill poured himself into it with dedication and integrity.
Bill had a true passion for learning and conversation. He loved politics, history, and staying up to date with current events, and he was always ready for a thoughtful discussion. His wisdom drew people to him, and it was not uncommon to find a group gathered just to hear his perspective. His warmth and curiosity made him a natural conversationalist, and his stories were shared with a bright smile and a twinkle in his eye.
One of Bill's great joys was dancing with Jane-especially shag dancing, which brought them both so much fun and connection. He also loved sports, whether it was playing tennis or golf or cheering on his favorite football teams. Bill was a man who embraced life fully and with joy.
His faith was a cornerstone of his life. A dedicated member of Trinity Methodist Church in Honea Path, SC, Bill served his church community faithfully. He was a man who loved people and genuinely delighted in spending time with them. His presence was a source of comfort, and his laugh-so full and warm-was unforgettable.
Bill has left his family and friends with something far greater than riches: a legacy of love, joy, wisdom, and strength. The memories he gave us are treasures we will carry always.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; his three children; 24 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Miriam McGee, and sister-in-law, Sara Bates. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles Bates; his sisters, Rebekah Harper and Betty Jo Addison; and his son-in-law, Craig Fleming.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church, 101 South Main Street, Honea Path, SC, with his son, Gil Bates, officiating. A private burial will follow at Garden of Memories in Belton, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, 101 South Main Street, Honea Path, SC 29654.
