William Kenneth Benge, a cherished member of the community and devoted family man, passed away on September 18, 2025, at Memorial Mission in Asheville. William was born on May 12, 1939, in Caldwell County, and dedicated over 40 years of his life to serving with the Old Fort Fire Department, where he held the esteemed position of chaplain. His commitment to service extended beyond firefighting as he also contributed his efforts to the Old Fort React and as a 1st responder.
A proud member of the Lackeytown Baptist Church, William served as a deacon and was deeply involved in his Church. Known for his warm spirit and dedication to helping others, he brought joy and support to many. His love of family was evident in his close relationships with his children and grandchildren, often seen traveling with them or making apple butter for Pioneer Day, a tradition he cherished. His pets held a special place in his heart also.
William is survived by his sons, Kelvin Benge (Bridgette) and Jimmy Benge, and his daughter, Sonya Brendle (David). He also leaves behind his sister, Janet Pearson, and his beloved grandchildren, Amanda Benge (Tyler Ball), Ashley Benge (Cillian Cotter), Landon Brendle (Hope), and Alyssa Brendle; sister-in-law, Mary Woods and brother-in-law, Bud Hall. His legacy of kindness and service will live on through all who knew and loved him.
He was predeceased by his wife, Naomi Howell Benge; his brothers, Roger Benge and Tom Woods.
Visitation for William Kenneth Benge will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at the Lackey Town Missionary Baptist Church located at 2254 Lackeytown Rd, Old Fort, NC 28762. The service will be officiated by Rev. Jeffrey Parker and Rev. Paul Speagle. Burial to take place following the service at Lackeytown Baptist Church Cemetery.
William will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his passion for helping others, and his enduring spirit. His presence will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
