MOUNT PLEASANT- William “Bill” Fleig Jr., 63, of Mount Pleasant, died unexpectedly Monday, September 30, 2024, at his home.
Bill was born April 16, 1961, in Fairfield, the son of William and Mary (Ryan) Fleig Sr. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1980. Following graduation, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served our country for three years. Bill returned to the Mount Pleasant community in 1984 and worked as a correctional officer at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility for 33 years. During his time there, he served as the K-9 officer for 18 of those years. On April 13, 2012, Bill was united in marriage to Jan Calhoun in New London. He enjoyed going to the Rec Center and riding his Indian motorcycle. Bill was a sports fanatic, but especially loved cheering on the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and the Washington Commanders. He had a soft spot in his heart for animals which lead to a part time job at Almost Home Dog Daycare. Bill was a member of the American Legion.
Bill is survived by his wife Jan; two step daughters Brandy (Shane) Christe of Bellville, IL, Kelly (Stanton) Miller of Smithfield, IL; two step grandchildren Austin Christe, Kaytlyn Dryden; step great grandchild Kennedy Dryden; four siblings, Denise Blough of Iowa City, Randy (Bert) Fleig of Libertyville, Cinda (Bruce) Emerson of Fairfield, Jeff (Laura) Fleig of St. Charles, MO; brother-in-law Dave (Beth) Calhoun of Marion; and his faithful companions Beau and Memphis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Donald.
Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Olson-Powell Chapel & Crematory. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. Visitation will be held 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. Monday, October 7, at Olson-Powell Chapel & Crematory. The family will be present to greet friends beginning at 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Henry County Sheriff K-9 Program.
