FRED HUNTINGTON Obituary

HUNTINGTON, FRED WERT Feb. 24, 1943 to Oct. 21, 2010 "Who wants to go to the principal's office?" Instead of cowering at the horrible suggestion, all the children in the Valley Vista Elementary School auditorium raised their hands. The police officer talking about the consequences of bad behavior, did not realize he was dealing with Dr. Fred Huntington, the principal students loved to visit. Fred always kept his treasure chest of toys and special rocks and minerals in his office so students could pick out a prize when their teacher sent them to the principal for doing something right. Fred retired from Valley Vista School when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1999. He had also been a principal in Lawndale and Corcoran California as well as a teacher in several schools in Chula Vista. Fred's photos were shown at the Del Mar Fair and he was in many bands, playing keyboards, guitar, saxophone and, more recently, the vibes. He loved music, particularly jazz, and wrote over 100 articles related to education and computers as well as several unpublished novels. Fred is survived by his wife, Barbara, mother, Carole, brothers Bruce and Tom, sister Carrie Dyal, daughters Angela Huntington and Melody Campbell, sons Dale and Dan, as well as grandchildren, Alison, Claire, Nathan, Ethan, Zachary, and Faith. Friends, teachers, and former students are invited to share an informal service at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 26th, at New Hope Community Church, 2720 Olympic Parkway, Chula Vista. Feel free to wear his signature Hawaiian shirt and/or a crazy tie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego, http://www.pdasd.org or the Southern Caregiver Resource Center, http://caregivercenter.org . We are grateful to both organizations for helping us through his illness.

He was my principal years ago, he left an impact on my life and my career choice. I am now an assistant principal and hoping to one day be a principal just like him. He touched students lives every single day and I wish I would have had the chance to thank him for all he did.

Thank you, Fred, for all of the lessons you taught me about optimism, open-mindedness, understanding, and making lemonade. Somebody has to stay and represent the liberal side, right? Knowing you has been one of my life's most precious gifts. I love you always.

Valley Vista was a better place because of Dr. Huntington. He was an amazing principal. Even when I was in his office for being in trouble, he was always so kind and understanding. He never had a mean thing to say about anyone and was always willing to help in any situation. I will always carry him in my heart! My deepest condolences to his family.

I was a student at Valley VIsta in the 90's. Kind of a trouble maker so got sent to Dr. Huntington's office often, but to be honest I looked forward to it. He was such a funny and charismatic person, and I feel like every time I walked out of that office I had gathered one more life lesson from him. I definitely feel that in the time spent at Valley Vista he is one of the few people that had an immense impact on me, including some of the teachers as well. My father and him got along very well, and spoke often. I only wish I had not procrastinated for so long and had gone to see him before his passing. My condolences to the family and friends of this dear man. He will always be remembered by his peers, friends, and those elementary school kids that got to know Dr. Huntington for the great teacher/principal that he was.

Dr. Huntington helped me host a baseball card show in the cafeteria at Valley Vista when I was in fourth grade. I still remember the excitement with which he responded to my idea when I was only ten years old. What a beautiful teacher and person.
