William Cameron Obituary

William Cameron, 88, of Loveland, passed away on May 19, 2010. He was born on August 8, 1921 in Denver, CO to Patrick and Agnes Cameron. He grew up in Craig, CO and graduated from high school there in 1939. After high school, he took the train to Denver to work at Colorado General Hospital. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. From Ft. Logan, he went to Camp Roberts in CA in for basic training. After basic training William was sent to Ft. Sill, OK to an artillery unit where he entered officer’s candidate’s school, received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant and joined the paratroopers. William married Beverly Bowman on August 15, 1943 at Ft. Bragg, NC. She later passed away on April 12, 2001. He was sent overseas with the 82nd Airborne Division until the end of WWII. On Christmas Eve 1944, he was captured by the Germans and managed to escape, which is highlighted in John McKenzie’s “On Time On Target” book on the 82nd Airborne. After the war, he returned home and went to school until called and he served in the 2nd Division in the Korean conflict. William joined the Red Cross in 1967 and served a tour in Vietnam. He retired from the Red Cross in 1984. He is survived by his sons, David Cameron and wife Yong cha of Port Orange, FL and Mike Cameron of Loveland, CO; daughter, Karen Hughes and husband Garland of Ft. Lupton, CO; sister –in-law Hollis of Rifle, CO; 4 grandchildren; 1 stepson, 1 stepdaughter, and 4 step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; William, his son and Harry his grandson in Alaska; and two brothers, Dan and George. The Rosary is at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, May 27, 2010 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Loveland. The burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery with full military honors at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2010 in Denver, CO. Memorial contributions may be made to Larimer County Food Bank, The House of Neighborly Service, Pathways Hospice or the American Red Cross in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.
