William Cone Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Skroch Funeral Chapel - Flandreau on Dec. 29, 2025.
Bill Cone, age 89, entered into his heavenly home on December 27, 2025 surrounded by his family and is now rejoicing in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

William Augustus Cone was born in Trent, SD, on February 15, 1936, to William A. Cone Jr. and Virgie (Hoover) Cone.

The family later moved to Flandreau, where Bill spent much of his childhood and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1954. He went on to graduate from South Dakota State University in 1958.

Bill married Peggy Scofield on June 3, 1960. Together, they taught in the Ruthven Iowa School System before Bill began working for the American Cancer Society in Mason City, IA, in 1965. They lived in Mason City until 1969, when they purchased a farm near Flandreau and returned to the area. Bill taught in Verdi Public School and Egan Public School while farming until 1996, when they made the move to Brookings. He later worked at Brookings Health System as a part-time custodian beginning in 1997, where he continued until 2010.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and Fort Sill, OK.

Bill found joy in teaching, farming, serving others, and traveling with his beloved wife, Peggy. His life reflected a quiet dedication to hard work, service, and love for those around him.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; sisters-in-law Sharon Kneebone Amburn and Carol Price; and eight nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Virgie Cone.

Though there will be no funeral service, the family takes comfort in knowing that Bill is at peace and rejoicing in eternal life with Christ.
