William H. Conroy Jr., Bill, Billy to his parents and siblings was born July 14, 1948 to William and Alice Conroy in St. Louis, Missouri. He passed May 13, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father and younger brother Edward.
Bill graduated from Wellston High school in St. Louis, MO. He was then drafted into the army where he was wounded in Vietnam and received many commendations including a Purple Heart and a Bronze star with valor.
Bill dedicated his professional career to fellow veterans as a service officer at the DAV, Supervisor at PVA and serving as director of Colorado Department of Veterans Affairs.
Even after retiring from his 39 years of work everyone knew that Bill was a reliable resource for navigating the VA and knew they could call upon him for advice. His knowledge and compassion were part of what made him so admired in his career. He would never hesitate to help guide veterans to receive the benefits they deserve.
Bill fell in love with the Colorado mountains where he made his home with his wife Ruth, daughter Ashley and son Daniel. Bill was the ultimate family man with family dogs who were all spoiled by his generous spirit. Later in life he was blessed with daughter-in-law Jessica and his two beautiful granddaughters Everly and Rayna who were the apples of his eye.
If anyone asked how Bill was doing he would say "reasonable" which he often was; a lover of American muscle cars, monster movies, coffee with his favorite retired colleagues every Monday. He loved family reunions at the farm. He had simple tastes in food, his favorites being hot dogs, a sandwich, chicken noodle soup and of course a Jack and coke in the evening. He loved rock and roll and the blues- no elevator music. He liked to dress well. He was playful and would get on the floor to play with his grandkids with "alligator" and epic bowling games. He was an opinionated news junkie and was up on politics and the goings on of the world, eager to engage in animated discussions. He was a provider. He loved to make people feel well taken care of and was the guy who would get up early to get the coffee and buy some doughnuts and pastries before anyone else was awake.
Bill had a strong work ethic and liked to tell everyone how he had worked hard his entire life. He had been a "whistle boy" at a roller rink, sorted hangers at a dry cleaners, hand washed cars at a car wash and worked at Bardenheier's winery all at a young age.
Bill was a faithful servant to veterans and the Lord and left this world a better place. His strength, courage, compassion, and kindness will be missed tremendously by his 101 year old mother Alice, his siblings Mag and Tom, his wife Ruth, daughter Ashley, son Dan, daughter-in-law Jess and granddaughters, Everly and Rayna.
We say not goodbye but see you later to our beloved Bill.

Rest in Peace Bill. Remembering working with you as a young prosthetic chief, and learning the ind and outs of the Fed and VBA made a true difference on the care of our brother & sister veterans. You made a HUGE difference as a Rep and Director of the State of Colorado´s Veterans Affairs, streamlining it and bringing it into the future. I´ll miss your wry humor and positive attitude through all. My deepest condolences to your wonderful family, who I know are reeling from the loss of you, as we all are. Rich.

I met Bill while he was the Veterans Affairs Director for the State. He turned an entire department around and made it successful. It has not been the same since his retirement. While working for the State he earned my respect and admiration for his ability and knowledge in commanding a department successfully. He will be dearly missed and remembered fondly.

I met Bill as a entry level VSR at the Denver RO and will always be thankful for his guidance and love for our Veterans that he passed onto my work ethic. His smile as he walked into the RO always gave me a great start to my day. He will be missed. My sincerest condolences to the family. What a legacy. Veronika Kagarise

I first met Bill when I became a rating specialist @ the VARO in the 90's. If one had the opportunity to work with Bill on veterans' claims, he or she was fortunate. I believe those who worked with Bill respected & admired his passionate efforts on behalf of veterans. He was one of the kindest human beings I've ever known. I'm sure that Bill & his family, friends, acquaintances, & probably so many veterans would agree with me in that we need more people in the world like him. His obituary at this site, Legacy.com, describes the Bill we knew to a "T". Most sincerely & with great sympathy, Linda Flynn
