William 'Bud' H. Duncans Obituary
Bud Duncan, age 94, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 3, 2025 at the North Carolina Veteran's Home in Black Mountain, NC.
He was born; William Hayden Duncan, in the home of his parents, Jesse Herbert Duncan and Valerie Elizabeth Biddix Duncan, on November 9, 1930. Along with his parents and sister, Mary Virginia Duncan they made their home on Walnut Avenue in Spruce Pine.
He graduated from Harris High School. While at Harris, he played football, basketball and softball. He was a Boy Scout of Local Troup 501. Later he served as an assistant and scout master. He was also active in the Teen Timer's Club. He attended both Fork Union and Hargrave Military Academies. He entered Davidson College majoring in accounting and was active in the school's R.O.T.C. program and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He joined the U.S. Army and reported to basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC. While there he became an Army clerk and was a starting pitcher on the Ft. Jackson softball team.
Bud married, Gay Grindstaff of the Kalmia community who is the daughter of the late Homer and Goldie Grindstaff and returnied to the mountain home he loved. He started several businesses including a nursery, a commercial shoe lace factory with contracts to the government and was a regional sales representative for several national soft goods companies. Bud was a member of the Spruce Pine Rotary Club, the Spruce Pine Lions Club, was on the Board of Director of the Spruce Pine Library, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spruce Pine where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.
His other interests included fly fishing, nature outings, watching his children compete in various sports and endeavors, as well as Davidson Wildcats basketball. He believed in the importance of serving and supporting his local community and businesses. In his last years, he enjoyed living at the North Carolina Veteran's home in Black Mountain and visiting with family and friends.
Left to cherish his memories are his sons; Hayden, John and Dennis Duncan all of Spruce Pine, his daughters; Diane Duncan of Lowell, SC and Dawn Duncan Bailey of Mt. Holley. NC, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
A service to honor the life of Bud Duncan will be on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am until 11:00 am on Saturday, April 12, 2025 in the funeral home chapel.
