William Powers Obituary

LTC William Edward Powers (USAF Ret) died in San Diego on May 27, 2023, at the age of 99.
An only child, he was born to Ethel (MacDonald) and Patrick Powers on May 1,1924, in Boston, MA.
Upon his H.S. graduation in 1943 he enlisted in the Navy. He served on the USS Teton and was in Tokyo Bay at the ceremony of Japan's surrender. He attended Tufts University, graduated, but decided he wanted to fly. In the Korean War he flew 132 combat missions and in Vietnam he flew 487 more, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross four times.
Bill wed Joan Ryan on June 25, 1953. They had three children and were married for 53 years until her death in 2007.
A Commemorative Air Force member, Bill flew WWII-era aircrafts and performed as a stunt pilot in the film "Pearl Harbor." He was a committed grandfather, dog owner, and supporter of Ukraine freedom.
Burial will be in Miramar National Cemetery (San Diego) at 1:15 pm on June 20, 2023. Further information at www.dignitymemorial.com.
