Williamsburg—William “Bill” Robert Everhart, a beloved community member, educator, and coach, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, at the age of 77.

Bill was born on December 30, 1946, in Maryville, Missouri, the son of Jesse Fay II and Eva (Shell) Everhart. He grew up on a farm outside of Bedford, Iowa, alongside his three brothers, where he developed a strong work ethic and shared many adventures. He maintained a close relationship with his uncle Bill and aunt Clara, who played a significant role in his life.

Bill graduated from Bedford Community High School in 1965. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Peru State College and a Master's degree from the University of Iowa. From 1971 to 1974, Bill served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of sergeant while deployed to Germany during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, Bill served in the Iowa National Guard and returned to Williamsburg to raise his family in a community he deeply loved.

On January 22, 1967, he married Mary Louise Straight in Bedford, Iowa. Together, they shared a lifetime of love and family. Bill was a P.E., American History, Humanities, Geography, and Government teacher at Williamsburg High School for 34 years. He coached football, baseball, and wrestling. He was known as a tough but fair educator and a coach who always prioritized the accomplishments of his students both on and off the field. Many of "Skilley's" classroom lessons weren't fully understood until later in life, but he remained a proud advocate of his students' growth and achievements.

After retirement, Bill excelled at being a grandpa "known as Grampy" to his five grandchildren, mastering the art of changing diapers late in life. He would drop everything to be there for whatever his grandchildren needed and was always there to support them in their activities. He also enjoyed attending professional baseball games, visiting presidential libraries, and spending time with his community, family, and high-school friends.

Bill was a member of the Williamsburg Iburg-Poulson VFW Post #8797, the Williamsburg Red Socks Baseball Club, Hot Wheels Collection Club, and the Iowa County Historical Society. He felt incredibly fortunate to have spent his teaching career and raised his family in such a wonderful community.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Emily (Darrell) Campbell, of Homestead; his son, Jacob (Kristin) Everhart, of Bettendorf; five grandchildren, Carly and Cady Campbell, Owen, Cole, and Alec Everhart; two brothers, Jesse Fay (Elaine) Everhart III of Camanche, IA and Fred (Cathy) Everhart of Grandview, MO and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Louise, an infant daughter Kemery Anne, and his older brother Donald Everhart.

A Celebration Of Life Graveside service will be 11:00 am Monday, May 13, 2024 at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A general memorial fund has been established.
