William J. Fitzgerald, a resident of Billerica MA, previously of Medford, MA, died on Friday April 17th, 2020 after a period of declining health. Bill was born on September 20, 1942 in Cambridge MA, the son of the late John T. and Annelle (Jasinski) Fitzgerald.
Bill graduated from Medford High School. He was employee of MIT for 41 years. He worked on campus in Cambridge for many years and rose to the position of Assistant Director of Data Processing. Later in his career he worked in the MIT Lincoln Laboratories Fiscal Office where he was Assistant Comptroller, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. A member of the MIT Retiree Association, he looked forward to catching up with his friends and retired coworkers at the annual picnic and holiday get togethers.
Bill was an avid gardener for many years, starting plants from seedlings he cultivated in the hot house he built with his father. Most Sundays you could find him at his brother Jim’s house where they watched the Patriots and other Boston sports teams while enjoying a delicious dinner prepared by his sister in law Ginny. He loved driving up to Essex to the Village Restaurant for fresh seafood with his brother John and sister in law Ann. He also enjoyed going to Maine to his brother’s summer home for family get togethers.
In his retirement he loved to go for long walks in his neighborhood and indoors at the Burlington Mall during the winter months. Inspired by his neighbor he joined a local golf league with a great group of guys where they played many local courses. He liked to take a drive with his neighbor to the casinos in Connecticut. Always the proud uncle he was the biggest fan of all his nieces and nephews as he loved attending their sporting events, recitals and school plays.
Bill was the loving brother of James Fitzgerald and his wife Virginia and the brother in law of Ann Fitzgerald of Reading. He was predeceased by his brother John Fitzgerald.
Bill was the cherished uncle of eight nieces and nephews and twenty great nieces and nephews.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, a private burial service was held at Wood End Cemetery in Reading, MA.
The family is extremely grateful to the caregivers and medical staff at DaVita and Lahey Hospital in Burlington for their compassionate care.
A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Bill’s life will take place at a later date.
