My first memory of Bill Franz was 20+ years ago. We were at my son´s house and this young man came in with a huge smile, big laugh and a large tray of dried fruits and nuts. It was Bill. He was dating his future wife, Betsy, and this was the first time meeting some of her relatives. I thought he was trying to make a good impression, but it was just Bill being Bill!
Bill knew a lot about a lot and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge. He made wine in his father´s basement and on one occasion my husband and I had a tour of his operation. Bill was very proud to explain each step and share the finished product!
Bill loved cooking and he knew the best places to procure the best ingredients. When he found out I enjoyed baking bread, Bill gave me some of his sourdough starter! Another time he presented me with an armful of his favorite cookbooks to read.
Bill´s knowledge went beyond wine making and food. He was full of facts about a host of subjects. This trait has been lovingly nurtured in his son, Simon.
Bill didn´t just talk about life, he lived the life he talked about!
When Bill attended family gatherings, we were sure to learn a new game or hear a great story. I will miss his "bear"hugs!
My heartfelt condolences to Bill´s family
