Freyler, William "Bill" John, of
Wheeling, WV, died on August 1, 2025 at Wheeling Hospital.
He was born November 23, 1940, son of the late Gus W. Freyler and Edna Boone Freyler.
Bill was a graduate of Triadelphia High School and West Liberty State College in 1963.
He was a retired employee of the State of West Virginia. He worked 22 years as a cashier for the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Commission and 8 years as an officer assistant at the Wheeling Field Office of the West Virginia Worker's Compensation.
Bill served his community in a variety of endeavors. He was a member and leader of the Omaha 4-H Club, as well as leader of the Mountaineers 4-H Club. He served as a counselor of Ohio County 4-H camps for over 50 consecutive years. Also served as counselor at the Alpha Il at Jackson's Mill for 18 years. Bill held offices in Ohio County 4-H Leaders Association and Ohio County 4-H All Stars. He served on the Ohio County 4-H Foundation. He was honored as an outstanding Ohio County All-Star by the WV 4-H All-Stars.
Bill served on YMCA board of directors, the United Cerebral Palsy board where he organized a Swim/Run for eight years.
Likewise, Bill was active as deacon/ruling Elder on Session at Stone Presbyterian Church where he sang in the Sanctuary Choir and served as a Chaperone for two youth missions - Buffalo, NY and Baltimore, MD.
Bill was an avid runner where he served as communications director of the Ohio Valley Runners/Walkers Club. He participated in six Big Boy Classics.
He also served as a member/co-sponsor of the Emoclew Club for Handicapped Adults for over 40 years.
Bill was a past member of the Wheeling Jaycees where he received several state awards. He organized the First Aid Station for Elby's Big Boy Classic where he chaired the Chairman's Award.
Bill was a West Liberty State College Alumni and served as secretary of the Overlook Condo Association where he resided.
He is a current member of the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra Steering Committee.
Each summer or fall he visited Dave and Cindy Westover of Walpole, New Hampshire.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Phyllis A. Neal, in 2019; nephew, Robert "Brandy Porter; and sister, Delores "Dee" Porter, in 2020.
Surviving is one nephew, Gary L. (Rhonda) Porter, of Bellaire, OH, formerly of Proctor, WV, and one niece, Lisa Orlofske, Dunedin, FL. Also, several great-nephews and great-nieces, and several great-great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger Street,
Wheeling, WV (#304-242-2311) on Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Services will be held at Stone Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 8, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
Entombment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Halcyon Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
