William "Gitch" Duane Gitchell, age 63 of Corning, New York passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024 at home. He was born on September 18, 1960 in Corning, New York to Robert and Genevieve Gitchell.
Gitch will be fondly remembered for his dedicated service as a course marshal at Watkins Glen International for over 20 years. Easily recognizable with his socks pulled up, he was affectionately known as "Gitch" or "Doc" by many. Beyond the track, he cherished hunting, fishing, and spending time at the hunting camp at Hodges Deer Camp in Addison. His commitment to community service began at the age of 16 when he joined the Gibson Fire Department, later serving a remarkable 45 years with the East Corning Fire Department.
Gitch is survived by his significant other Kimberly Feehan; 3 children: William D. (Jessica) Gitchell Jr. of Corning, Daniel Feehan of Corning, Zack Gitchell of Corning; 2 grandchildren: Dawson and Allie Gitchell; siblings: Robin (Chuck) Gitchell-O'Brien of Corning, and Robert (Tracey) Gitchell of Corning; uncle: Robert and Cheryl Smith of FL, Nina Smith of Hornby; cousins: Mona McPherson of Beaver Dams and Chrissy Smith of Beaver Dams; and cousins: Patsy and Sheldon Kelly, Eddie Smith, best friend: Billy Tyler. Also, many other cousins and friends, including his best friend: Al (Gail) Hodge of Addison.
In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by siblings: Beverly (Henry) Haight and Danny Gitchell;
His wish was to have a big party and to celebrate his life with a pig roast with all of his friends and family in attendance. The date and time will be announced at a later date. Carpenter's Funeral Home, Corning, NY has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations in William's name may be sent to Corning Joint Fire District, 20 South Maple Street, Corning, NY, 14830.
