William Jenkins Gohl, Sr., beloved husband of Sharon Rose (nee Malcolm) Gohl, proud father of Kevin Richard Gohl and the Rev. William Jenkins Gohl, Jr. (the Rev. Arwyn Pierce Gohl), and loving grandfather of Saliese, David, Andrew, and Joyanne Gohl, died at home on June 25, 2025, after a brief cancer diagnosis.
Born on February 1, 1950, he grew up in West Hempstead, NY. A 1968 Auto Mechanics graduate of Sewanhaka Vocational Technical High School in Elmont, NY; he subsequently served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971. His entire career was spent serving the community, in increasing roles of responsibility, with The Town of Hempstead - Sanitary District No. 6. Beginning as a Mechanic's Helper, 32 years later he retired as Fleet Supervisor, with responsibility for overseeing the acquisition, maintenance, and upkeep of the town's fleet of garbage trucks and recycling trucks. He retired in 2007, and for the last three years he and Sharon split their time between Sebring, FL and their home in Shrewsbury, PA. Bill and Sharon were avid campers, traveling the country in their motor home; and were supporters of their camping club charities. In recent years they were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hametown, PA.
For 25 years, Bill was a part of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he found supportive community, and worked hard to provide that supportive community for others. Just before his death, his home group presented him his 25 year anniversary chip, which was quite a blessing for him and his family.
He and Sharon have been together since she was 16 and he was 18; married in 1973, they would have celebrated their 52nd Wedding Anniversary in August. Theirs was a special love, and the enduring image of their sitting beside each other holding hands will be a treasured memory of their children, grandchildren, family, and many friends.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Audrey Gohl; and his brother, Frederick (Ricky) Gohl. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren; Bill is survived by his brother-in-law Frank Malcolm, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, his cousin (whom he considered a brother) Richard Weiss (Jill) and their family, and his many communities - especially his camping clubs and his AA groups, he was "thankful that they were his people."
The Cremation Society of Central Pennsylvania has been entrusted with Bill's arrangements. On Monday, July 7 the family will receive visitors at 5pm, with a service at 6pm, and a meal at 7pm all at St. Paul's Lutheran Church (Hametown, PA) - 11894 Susquehanna Trail S, Glen Rock, PA 17327, with his and Sharon's pastor, the Rev. Katie Brantner, officiating.
