William 'Bill' Gruszewski, age 83, passed away on Sunday, October 20th at the Northfield Retirement Community. Bill was born April 19, 1941 in Chicago, the son of Bill Sr. and Helen (Kott) Gruszewski.
Bill grew up in the Chicago area and obtained a bachelor's degree from Saint Joseph's College in Indiana and a master's degree from the University of Illinois in the subject of mathematics.
Bill was united in marriage to Doris (Crowell) Gruszewski in 1969 and in 1972 their union was blessed with a daughter, Amy. Doris passed away after a battle with cancer in 1981.
Bill subsequently relocated to Minneapolis where he started work at the ELCA Board of Pensions. For the organization, he managed and monitored investments, a profession and passion that spanned more than 50 years.
Bill met Marjorie Hansen in Minnesota, and they were united in marriage on January 17, 1983 in Orono. Their son Toby was born in 1984, and in 1991 they found their home near Northfield. Bill became immersed in the community. He joined the board of the Valley Grove Church Preservation Society, the Northfield Senior Center's Finance and Investment Committee, and the Church of St. Dominic Finance Committee. Outside of his mathematical and financial prowess, Bill and Marjorie cultivated a large hobby farm at their home in Valley Grove where they grew various vegetables and flowers alike.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children, Amy Gruszewski of New York, Toby (Chad) Gruszewski of Hong Kong; step-daughter, Christine (Jeff) Scott of Minnesota; step-daughter in law, Laura Palmer of Minnesota; brother, Tom (Sue) Gruszewski of Delaware; sister in law, Lynne (Lou) Knight of Arizona; step-grandchildren, Austin and Colin Scott, Cody and Jasper Palmer, nieces Dawn and Hope Gruszewski, nephews Chase (Alisha) and Tyler Gruszewski, great niece Senna Parsa, and many loving step nieces and nephews and their families.
Bill is preceded in death by his first wife, Doris; parents, Bill Sr. and Helen; brother-in-law Tom Hansen; and step-son, Craig Palmer.
Mass of Christian Burial for Bill will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 16 at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield with Visitation held one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00. Interment will be held at Valley Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of St. Dominic or Valley Grove Cemetery.
