William R. Guthy

October 8, 1932 - December 25, 2025

William Robert Guthy, 93, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 25, 2025.

Bill was born in 1932, the son of John Guthy and Mary (Purcell) Guthy. He is preceded in death by his brothers John and Peter, as well as his beloved wife Marilyn E. Guthy.

He is survived by his sister, Mary O'Reilly, his six children (and their spouses), William and Rick Guthy (sons of the late Elaine Carson), Kathleen Shelley, Joanne Cheshire, Jennifer Guthy Moran, and Marilyn Passanisi, as well as his 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Bill was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a hard-working butcher who worked in the meat packing district for 40+ years, and after he retired, he worked as a security guard at the Rockville Centre Links for 20 years. He was an amazing athlete who loved playing basketball in his younger years and became a great tennis player a little later in life. He was a real beach bum and spent as much time as he could at the beach, especially his favorite place, Malibu Beach Club. He even became known as, "Malibu Bill". He was a great story teller, and because of is humor, wit and lack of a filter, he was known for telling very funny stories, some of which you would almost find hard to believe. Always a gentleman, even in his 90s, he'd be the first to give up his seat or rush to hold the door for someone.

Known to his family as, "Pop", he amazed us all with his independence, living on his own in Long Beach, right up until the last few months of his life when his health started to decline. He kept himself busy doing things he enjoyed like playing cards, exercising, listening to music, completing Sudoko and crossword puzzles, sitting in the sun and feeding the seagulls. He also loved to cook for his family and friends and his home was usually the gathering place. He was always waiting for you at his door when you arrived and lingered at his door to wave goodbye when you left.

He was surrounded by his children on Christmas Eve, and then God decided to quietly take him home early Christmas morning. He will certainly be missed, as life as we know it will be a little less interesting and a lot less funny, but our memories will last a lifetime. Rest in peace Pop. We love you.
