William J. Hence, Jr., age 76, of Glenside, formerly a longtime resident of Willow Grove, passed peacefully on November 30, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth "Betty" (née Worrall), and his four children: Bill III (Dina), Rob (Kristin), Jenni (Dave), and Lisa (Pete). He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Owen, Will IV, Kayley, Jackson, Jonathan, Paige, and Nicholas. He is also survived by his loving sisters Susan (Steve), Dorothy (the late Bill), and the late Peggy Ann. Bill was a devoted cousin and a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Dorothy Hence.
Bill attended La Salle College High School and later Penn State University, where he developed a lifelong pride in being a "Stater." He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan and rarely missed a game-whether at home, in the hospital, or during physical rehab. Bill also had a deep love for NASCAR and dirt track racing, a passion he proudly passed on to his children, who continue the tradition of catching races whenever they can. Bill was an avid history buff whose memory and knowledge of American history was second to none. A true history enthusiast, Bill brought the past to life for countless students through his thoughtful teaching and storytelling.
In addition to his devotion to family, Bill was known for his strong work ethic and community involvement. He was the owner of P&H Diesel, where he built lasting relationships with customers and colleagues through his honesty, reliability, and dedication. Bill also lent his booming voice and dry enthusiasm as an announcer at numerous swim meets over the years-an unmistakable presence that became a cherished part of those events.
Bill dedicated countless hours to serving on volunteer boards throughout his life, always giving his time, energy, and leadership to support the organizations and communities he cared about. His generous spirit, dedication, and unfailing willingness to serve created a legacy that will endure.
Bill will be remembered for his love of family, his deep roots in the community, and the joy he found in sharing his passions with others. His presence, humor, and kindness will be missed by all who knew him.
