William J Henderson

In William J. Henderson, (Bill) of Miami died at home over Thanksgiving weekend 2024. He was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas March 7, 1941, and had lived in Miami for 55 years. Bill graduated from Benjamin J. Bosse High School in Evansville, Indiana in 1959. He began his career in newspapers, working at The Chicago Sun Times from 1959-1963. He served his country in The Air Force from 1963 - 1967, as a cryptographer. As a result of his service, he was eligible and active in American Legion Post 31 in Miami. After his honorable discharge as a staff sergeant, he, began work at The Miami Herald where he was employed for 34 years and retired as a supervisor of operations.
In Miami Bill was an active member of the community. He served as an elder of The Palmetto Presbyterian Church and held many offices in The Masonic Order. He was Past Master of Meridian Daylight Lodge, #274 and Past Master, Coconut Grove Lodge #258. He was A Perpetual Member of Hialeah-Opa-locka Lodge #391. Also, Bill had served as The Past Patron of The Daylight Chapter #206, Order of The Eastern Star. He was a member of Chapter #141, Order of The Eastern Star, a member of Miami Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite Bodies, as well as Mahi Shriners and Past Masters Unit. In recent years, Bill had been active in Elks Lodge #948 where he was a Past Exalted Ruler and where a Memorial Service will be held in his honor at 6pm on December 20. Details are given below.
Bill was a devoted friend and a kind and generous man who gave advice when asked and without judgment. Admired for his good humor, wit, and organizational skills, he was unique in both intelligence and conviviality. The son of Chester A. Henderson and Matilda Elizabeth Westfall Henderson, he was also predeceased by his nephews Tim Foster and Sam Foster and his brother-in-law Roland Foster. Survivors are his sister Ann Henderson Foster, nephews Ben Foster and Bill Foster, great nieces and nephews, beloved cousins, and many cherished friends.
A graveside service is planned for 11 am on December 20, 2024, at Woodlawn South, 11655 SW 117th Avenue, Miami. An evening memorial at The Elks Club Lodge 948, 10301 SW 72nd Street, Miami. All those who cherish his memory are invited to attend either or both as we commend his spirit to God.
