William Haywood Hughes Jr. (Bill), born 4/19/1940 he was 85 years old, entered into his eternal rest on 9/28/25 at home with his family around his bedside. He was a devoted follower of Christ, whose faith guided every step of his life. A longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church, he faithfully served in many roles throughout the years, including as a Deacon, and several other roles in the church.

He is survived by Connie Harris, Carie Davis (Robert), Pamela Lasher, William Haywood Hughes III, William Henry Hughes, Shelby Tharpe (Tim), Shelly Smith (Henry). Grandsons Darren Singleton (Lindsay) and Travis Davis. Granddaughters, Crystal Singleton, Leslie Smith and Priscilla Gill. Great grandson S.J. Hatcher, Easton Singleton and Ash Smith. Brother John Arthur Hughes (Louie), Sisters Mary Ann Winslow and Margaret Ann Edwards (Jimmy). Several cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father William Haywood Hughes Sr, Mother Mary Moore Hughes, Wife Sherry Ann Hughes, Brother Paul Hughes, Daughter in-law Jackie Hughes and granddaughter Kendal Tharpe.

Mr. Hughes also served his country honorably as a veteran of the United States Air Force. His commitment to duty, both to God and country, was a cornerstone of his life.

Known for his steadfast spirit, generous heart, and servant leadership, Bill was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer a word of encouragement, or share his testimony of God's love. His life was a true reflection of his dedication to the church and community.

Beyond his service to Bethel Baptist Church Bill was a loving father/grandfather/brother/uncle/friend. He cherished time with his family, and his legacy of faith and kindness will live on in all who knew him.

For more than 25 years he took pride in keeping the Church grounds beautiful serving both God and his church family through his work. He also cut grass at the Chase City Fairgrounds.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

A celebration of his life will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, 9040 Trottinridge Rd. Chase City, on Friday, October 3, 2025 at 3:30 p.m. with Tony Royster officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

The family wishes to especially acknowledge that without the dedication and support of his daughter, Pamela and granddaughter, Crystal, who lovingly cared for him at home. He would not have been able to remain in the comfort of his own home during his final days. Their devotion was a true blessing to him and to the entire family.

The family also wishes to thank his caregiver (Tanya McFail and Susan Wootton), Sentara Hospice, and his church family for their love and support during this time
