William Jones, 79, of Moosic, died Thursday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. His wife of 54 years is the former Joan Golembeski.

Born in Scranton, son of the late William and Helen Moran Jones, he was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Church in West Scranton and a 1961 graduate of South Catholic High School. A United States Air Force veteran, he was stationed in Chateauroux, France. Billy was employed with the United States Postal Service, where he worked as a mail carrier for 25 years, and later worked for MACTac in Scranton for several years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 568, Minooka, where he served as chaplain for more than 30 years. He served as president of the Seton Catholic Men's Club, and was a member of the Minooka Notre Dame Club. An avid New York Yankees and Notre Dame football fan, Billy was also a coach for many years for the Minooka Little League and the Connell Park Teener League, as well as youth basketball teams at Holy Cross and St. Mary's.

Billy, also known as "Jonesey" to his friends, was well-known and well-liked throughout his community. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he loved traveling to Virginia and North Carolina to visit them. He will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
