William Thomas Light, a man of profound integrity and remarkable skills, left this world on February 7, 2026, in
Johannesburg, MI, after a life rich with love, adventure, and service. Born on October 8, 1942, in
Detroit, MI, William was a beacon of strength and wisdom to all who knew him.
Bill's journey began as the cherished son of Floyd V. Light and Alma J. (Lovelock) Light, who predeceased him along with his siblings, Ronald Lavalley, Ruth McGoldrich, and Norma Carneghi. His early years in Detroit were the foundation of a life characterized by hard work, dedication, and a passion for learning.
After proudly serving his country as a Machinist Mate in the United States Navy, Bill dedicated many years of his career to the General Motors Willow Run Assembly Plant. There, he worked diligently in HVAC, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in every task he undertook.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill was a man of diverse talents and interests. His hands, skilled and steady, brought new life to vintage automobiles. A 1936 Cadillac and a Model T were among the treasures he meticulously restored, a testament to his patience and attention to detail. Bill's love of learning and growth also led him to obtain a contractor's license, a real estate license, and even a pilot's license, each achievement reflecting his unquenchable thirst for knowledge and self-improvement.
Bill's heart, however, was always centered on his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Gail Light, who stood by his side as a partner in every sense of the word. Together, they raised two children, Kerry (Shibu) Joykutty and Eric (Shannon) Light, who continue to embody the values he instilled in them. His legacy also lives on through his three grandsons, Joshua, Jeremiah, and Jacob Joykutty, who will carry forward the lessons of kindness, perseverance, and integrity that their grandfather exemplified.
A man of the outdoors, Bill found solace and joy in the beauty of nature. Whether he was hunting in the quiet woods or fishing in the tranquil lakes, he was at peace. These moments not only provided relaxation but also an opportunity to reflect on the simple pleasures of life.
William Thomas Light's life was one of purpose and impact. His memory will be cherished and his presence sorely missed by all who were privileged to know him. As we say goodbye to a man who was so much to so many, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us for generations to come.
