Jack Liles was a man of many passions: fishing, hunting, cooking, and music. One of his most fabled accomplishments was turning his father on to the music of Ray Charles and Willie Nelson in the 1960's.
Born on a cold February day in Grenada, MS to Margaret and Billy Liles, Jack carried his love of Mississippi until the day he died. Growing up in Jackson, he hunted and fished with his grandfathers and friends. A crack shot and savvy fisherman, he almost always brought home the meat! This started his love of gourmet cooking for family and friends.
As a very young person, Jack realized that he was bound to work every day and that if he worked for someone other than his Dad he would be paid. Thus, began his ventures as a paper boy and deliverer of Cokes to jobsites, catching baby turtles and selling them to the Ben Franklin store, and countless other endeavors over his youth.
After serving in the Armed Forces during the draft era, he started work at KLLM, a refrigerated carrier based in MS. During his 44-year career there he worked at almost every position the company offered.
Jack retired in 2018 as health problems took their toll. He died July 9th, 2023 in Decatur, GA, which was a testament to his love for his wife, Betsy, who wanted to be close to her family. Although he did not die in Mississippi, his remains will return July 26th per his wishes. He was predeceased by Margaret and Billy Liles and his sons, Chaz McIntyre and Will Liles. He is survived by his wife, Betsy, and his sister Wynne Appleton.
A reception to honor his remarkable life will be held July 26th from 4-6pm at the Mississippi Museum of Art, located at 380 South Lamar St, Jackson, MS, 39201. In addition to the reception, Jack's life can be honored with a donation to Stewpot Community Services, 1100 W. Capital St., Jackson, MS 39203.
