William R. "Bill" Mathews, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Born on December 2, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, Bill lived a rich and fulfilling life, characterized by devotion to his family and a steadfast commitment to his career.
After dedicating 40 years to the Union Pacific Rail Road, where he was respected and cherished for his work ethic and camaraderie, Bill embraced retirement with the same passion that defined his career. His pride in his profession was evident, and he often reflected on the deep connections he formed with colleagues and friends along the way.
Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His love for golf led him to remarkable achievements as an amateur golfer, where he managed to participate in nine Publinx tournaments, a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. Whether on the green or cheering at the racetrack, his enthusiasm for golf and horse racing was infectious.
Yet, above all else, it was Bill's family that brought him the greatest joy. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren, Isabelle and Max DeGrande. His love for his wife, Lana, was a foundation of their life together, providing strength and warmth that drew the family close. He was equally proud of his daughter, Melissa, and her husband, Mark DeGrande, whom he cherished dearly.
Bill’s nurturing spirit extended beyond family to his meticulous landscaping endeavors, where he found solace and satisfaction in working the earth. This love for the yard was another canvas for his creativity and an opportunity to make the world around him more beautiful.
The bonds he shared with his family were evident until the very end. Surrounded by Lana and Melissa, with a single tear marking the depth of his love and emotion, William's passing was a moment of peace. He joins his parents, William Mathews and Wanda Mathews, in eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 pm, at Newcomer Funeral Home in St. Peters, Missouri, allowing family and friends to celebrate the extraordinary life of Bill Mathews. His impact on those who had the privilege to know him will undoubtedly resonate for years to come, as he continues to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Memorial contributions may be made in Bill's honor to Evelyn's House, where he spent his last days in their loving care.
