William "Bill" James Maxwell, Sr., 83, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Bayside Health & Rehab Center. Bill was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and was raised in Norfolk, VA. He was a veteran, having served in the Army in Japan after WWII. He graduated from Maury High School in 1948, attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1954 as an Industrial Engineer. He also did post graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., Creighton (Pittsburgh), PA, from 1955 through 1964, when he moved back to Norfolk and was employed by the Naval Air Rework Facility, where he managed the Advanced Technology Program and worked in Production & Facility Planning on comprehensive capital improvements. He retired in 1993 from NADEP (NARF). He was the son of the late Vincent and Thelma Maxwell. He is survived by his wife, Jean Davis Maxwell; sons, William James Maxwell, Jr., and wife Heather, and Dr. Robert Allen Maxwell, and wife Kelly; granddaughters, Katherine Elizabeth Maxwell and Erin Bailey Maxwell; sister, Shirley Maxwell Wilkie and husband Ted; nieces and nephews, Rodney Carlisle Davis of NYC, Patti Davis Host of Norfolk, VA, Steve Maxwell of Portsmouth, VA, Sandy Pattoon of Virginia Beach, VA, Pamela Davis of Virginia Beach, VA, Thomas Davis of Charleston, SC, Louis Bachtell, Jr., of Suffolk, VA, Larry Bachtell of Virginia Beach, VA and Kim Wilkie Kansco of Virginia Beach, VA. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald V. Maxwell; and brother-in-law, Earl Carlisle Davis, Jr., and wife Valerie. Bill was a member of Bayside Presbyterian Church and a Life Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed traveling, investing in real estate and initiating new concepts, for which he held two U.S. Patents. A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Monday at Bayside Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Donations may be made to Bayside Presbyterian Church or the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.
