Rockwood - William "Bill" Hamilton Maynard, 79, passed away July 10, 2024, at his home, surrounded by family, overlooking his favorite view – Moose River and Blue Ridge. He was born October 10, 1945, the son of Roger C. and Juanita (Fields) Maynard. Bill served in the U.S. Army. He also worked for Joe King and Wilson's Camps. He always juggled multiple jobs all his life: mowing lawns, plowing, haying, renting ice houses, late bus runs, and caretaking, all while running his family business, Maynard's in Maine.
As busy as he was, he still made time to enjoy life. Family was his greatest pride and joy. His grandkids and great-grandkids brought out the biggest smile on his face and the deepest chuckle. A good playful ribbing back and forth with him would earn you a lifetime of friendship and respect. Although not a big fan of large events, he enjoyed watching people gather. A good homemade spaghetti sauce dinner with a brownie sundae for dessert was his favorite. His grandchildren remember him pulling them in the dog sled to collect maple sap from the trees he tapped. Often, he would drive endless loops on the 4-wheeler with his grandkids and pets to catch a glimpse of the deer he enjoyed feeding out back. Bill would let any kids ride around on his lawn mowers, and even his model A truck. His joking and mischievous ways will live on in all of his many, many grandkids and great-grandkids. He loved his wife, Gail, faithfully and fearlessly all while keeping her on her toes with all his antics. They were the perfect pair to take on this life together.
Some of his greatest passions were hunting and fishing. One special memory from his son, Billy, "Shooting my first buck over 200 lbs. when I was 16 years old and having Dad sharing a beer with me to celebrate after we hauled it out of the woods. And having him there when I caught the record togue was very special to us both."
Bill is survived by his supportive wife of 56 years, Gail (Stade) Maynard; son, William "Billy" R. Maynard and his significant other, Amy Shorette, of Rockwood; daughter, Melissa Pachecho and her husband, Steve, of Jackman; daughter, Christy Merrill of Dover-Foxcroft; special niece, Tammy Vraux of Rockwood; sister, Colleen Owens of Greenville; grandchildren, Ashley Wade, Nicholas Turgeon, Ryan and Jocelyn Merrill, Angel, Destiny, Autumn, and Summer Pachecho.; special great-niece, Emily Vraux; eight great-grandchildren; and several other nieces and nephews, including Lorie, Danny, and Travis, cousins, and in-laws. He will be missed by two special dogs, Bear and Blaze. He was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Cossette of Franklin.
A graveside service with military honors will be held 12:30PM Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Rockwood, with Rev. Genise Stern officiating. Celebration of Bill's life will immediately follow the service at Maynard's. Anyone wanting to make donations may send them directly to Gail Maynard at P.O. Box 220, Rockwood, ME 04478. All donations will go toward burial costs. Please hold all food contributions until the day of the service. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
