William McCracken Obituary

On February 8, 2026, William McCracken passed away, at his son's home in Abilene, Texas.

Born on October 27, 1924, he lived 101-plus years

He was the youngest child of John Purl McCracken and Martha Jordan McCracken; all of his siblings preceded him in death, so he was the last of his generation.

He leaves behind his wife, Vada; three children, Ron McCracken, David McCracken and Cheryl Putro; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

William "Bill" had a varied career. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps. This training prepared him for his future life working for Brookville Equipment as a mechanic, and then as a shop foreman.

In retirement, Bill spent his time passing on his skills, substitute teaching at both the Jefferson County Vocational School and Clarion County Career Center.

Bill had a passion for history, and preserving it for future generations.

He researched, collected tools and lectured on Jefferson County's logging industry. Also, he had researched and built a replica of the first four-wheel drive vehicle. This replica is on permanent display in the Jefferson County Museum.

Additionally, he worked at preserving the Bowdish Railroad Display along with other members of the Jefferson County Historical Society, of which he was a member.

He will be interred at Riggs Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held in May to honor him.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the McKinney – d'Argy Funeral Home, located at 345 Main Street in Brookville.
