William Mooney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 2, 2012.
Dr. William A. Mooney M.D, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 2nd, 2012. He was born January 4th, 1922 in Flushing, NY. Dr. Mooney served his country during World War 2 as a medic. On June 6th, in 1951 he received a Medical Degree from the N.Y Medical College. He completed his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Flushing Hospital Medical Center, finishing in 1955. During his internship he met his future wife and mother of his children, Marilyn Kellen. They were married on September 13th, 1952. Dr. Mooney had a successful practice in West Islip, NY and worked at both Good Samaritan Hospital and Southside Hospital. He became the Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1976 until 1986, and from 1979-1980 he was President of the Medical Board. Through the course of his career, Dr. Mooney delivered over 14,000 babies. In 1988, Dr. Mooney was forced into an early retirement due to a broken arm. He would have practiced until the day he died if he could. William moved to FL, on beautiful St Pete beach in 1996 and lived the rest of his life in the comfort of his own home. He was thoughtful, kind, generous, funny, and astoundingly brilliant. He would read his mystery novels after breakfast, he enjoyed his crossword puzzles after lunch, and after dinner he loved to talk. The most important thing to William was his family. He is fervently loved and missed by those who knew him. Dr. Mooney is pre-deceased by his wife Marilyn Mooney, and his son William Keith Mooney. He is survived by his son Stephen Mooney, daughters Karen Trepes and Melissa VanVeldhuizen, and Grandchildren Nyssa and Mahria Trepes, Ryan, Kyle, Stephen, and Erin Mooney. The funeral will be held at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church on November 20th, at 10:00AM.
