William “Bill” Verne Overton, 72, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born on October 23, 1952, in Washington, DC.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents Alton Overton, Sr. and Gertrude Overton, his brother Alton Overton Jr., brother Daniel Overton, nephew Daniel Overton Jr., mother-in-law Deluvina Chacon, and brother-in-law, Douglas Chacon.
Bill is survived by his wife, Bernadette Overton; his children, Shawn Overton (Kelliann Overton), Christine Rios (Ray Rios), Anne Overton (Jennifer Woeller), and Casey Overton, all of Las Vegas; his brother, Donald Overton (Suna Overton) of California; his grandchildren, Stephanie Overton, Alison Rios, Sophia Overton, and Jackson Rios; and his nieces and nephews.
William Overton was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, specializing in Secure Communications Systems. He was especially proud of the time he served at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
When not focusing on communication on a national level, he was communicating through music, a foundation of Bill’s life, beginning with the teenage band that he and his brothers formed called The Kool Katz. The band performed in youth clubs across military bases. Then came the country and rock inspired Sweet Briar, which Bill formed with colleagues in Germany. Lastly, Bill toured with Flashback around the prairie towns of North Dakota and Minnesota. Everyone has a song that they can hear Bill playing or singing.
After retiring as a Master Sergeant in the USAF, he moved to Las Vegas, NV, and continued a career in security systems. Bill enjoyed taking motorcycle trips with Bernadette, camping with his family, and researching the genealogy of the Overtons, as well as the ancestors of his friends and extended family. In his final year, he would come to be known as Digital Bill within the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) community. Bill was a humanitarian, always seeing the good in people and willing to help and give what he had to those that needed it. He was a brother and father figure to all. He was, above all, a patriot and his patriotic values live on in his children and grandchildren.
Memorial service with full military honors will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Dr., Boulder City, NV 89005.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Judes Children Hospital or Southern NV Patriot Guard Riders.
