Will Green was born on January 10, 1944, in Greenwood, Mississippi. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1962 and received a bachelor's degree in both history and government from Mississippi State University in 1967. While at Mississippi State, he was an active member of Sigma Chi fraternity and remained involved with the fraternity and the university throughout his life. After his graduation he served on the staff of Senator John C. Stennis in Washington, D.C, before returning to Sunflower and Leflore Counties to farm. In 1971 at the age of 27, Will Green was elected Mayor of Inverness and was the youngest person ever to hold that office in the town's history. In 1975 he was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives for the 13th district and served with distinction in this capacity for 20 years. During his time as a ranking member of the House of Representatives, Will Green served as Vice Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and Chairman of both the Rules and Peer Committees. In 1993, he joined the staff of Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice as a legislative liaison as well as an agricultural liaison. Will Green was the Executive Director of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association for five years and currently was serving on the Mississippi Tax Appeal Board. As a long-time public servant, Will Green received numerous public recognitions for his contributions to his community, state, and nation. According to him, one of his most coveted honors was when he was chosen as Inverness Citizen of the Year in 2018. He has been described as a statesman who combined Southern charm with honesty and integrity all tempered with a wonderful sense of humor and an uncanny ability to tell a story that drew everyone together.
Will Green loved his family well. He counted as one of his greatest blessings being a member of such a loving and close-knit family who unhesitatingly loves and supports each other without measure. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richmond Lewis Scott Poindexter and Kathleen Jones Poindexter. Will Green is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Malinda Parr Poindexter and son, William Green Poindexter, IV (Bailey) and two grandchildren Ruth Allen Poindexter and William Green Poindexter, V, which he loved joyfully and dearly. He is also survived by his brothers: Richmond Lewis Scott Poindexter and his wife Sis of Inverness, Fred Jones Poindexter and wife Dotty of Greenwood and Robert Vanlandingham Poindexter and wife Allison of Inverness.
