William Porter Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 30, 2025.
William "Bill" Porter Sr. passed away on September 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will be felt for generations. Born on August 31, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bill lived a full and remarkable life.

From his years in the military, to his career with Service Merchandise, to his calling as a drug and alcohol counselor, Bill lived with purpose. His decision in 1982 to walk the road of sobriety became the turning point h but to guide and encourage countless others to do the same.

Bill was a man of deep faith, a proud member of New Covenant, and the first to step forward when someone needed help. He could fix anything, grow anything, and make anyone feel welcome. Whether he was traveling across the states, tending his garden, or teaching his grandchildren the joy of planting, Bill poured his heart into everything he did.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Dorthy, and his sons, Billy and Bobby. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathie Porter; his son, Patrick (Kathie); his brother, Larry; his grandchildren; and many family members and friends who will miss his steady presence and generous spirit. To know Bill was to love him, and to lose him is to feel the world a little dimmer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rehab's Retreat & Ranch in Kilgore, in honor of Bill's passion for helping others find hope and healing.
