Obituary for
William Lawrence Powers
William Lawrence Powers, age 58 of Woodbury, took his final breath on this earth on 7/8/24 at 8:38 am. He was born in Camden, NJ, to the late Daniel F. Powers Jr and Theresa E. (nee Gallagher). Bill lived life to the fullest and threw himself completely into everything he encountered. He was our phoenix, reborn from the ashes many times, landing in a place of gratitude and offering unconditional love to those around him.
As a child, he kept everyone on their toes. Injuries never stopped him for long and fear was not in his vocabulary. As a brother, he was kind and funny and always up to a practical joke in which another sibling was always the recipient. He was our mom's "Boo-Boo Bear", to our grandfather, he was "W.L." and to us, he was "Billy".
He loved his nieces and nephews and took great pride in their accomplishments. He loved to delight them with unique presents when they were younger and encouraged them to show their love for their parents every day. Bill loved cookies! Mom could never hide them well enough and it was not uncommon to hear her yelling about the chocolate chip cookie thief. Animals were drawn to Bill and there is no doubt he was greeted by Big Red, Rocky, Coco, Zoe, Tallie and Pepper who were the furry friends in his life.
Bill loved the beach. His beach chair was in his car all summer. He would often drive down for the day, ride his bike around, swim in the ocean, and finally, sit in his chair for a restorative, sun-filled walk down memory lane. Memories from vacations in the old white house in North Wildwood replay in our minds as though they were yesterday. If we were to write, "The Life of Bill Powers", it would be a book filled with joy and sadness, being lost and found, hope and redemption, and it would leave you wanting another chapter for an ending that occurred too soon. He handled his medical issues with grace and a sense of humor. He fought his illnesses by enjoying his favorite things when he felt well such as riding his bike, yoga in bed, going to the gym, and hanging out with his nieces and nephews. And, he tried to do these things even when he wasn't feeling well. Unfortunately, his spirit was much stronger than his body.
Bill will continue to live on through his shared memories and love. Honesty and ownership led him to many years of happiness. His years of volunteer service and availability to those who needed him inspire us to do the same.
His legacy of giving will be carried forward by his siblings, Daniel F. Powers III and his wife Misty of Pennsauken, Mary T. Porter and Rudyard of Mantua, Maureen M. Poulton and Michael of Woolwich Township. His love for his nieces and nephews, Daniel, Fiona, Maeve, Maura, Thomas, Finneas, and Lilla will be cherished.
"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." A. A. Milneworth.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm @ Mantua VFW Post 7679, 8 New York Ave, Mantua, NJ 08051.
