William Remter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel & Crematory - Appleton on Aug. 30, 2024.
Bill passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Bill was born in Appleton on October 18, 1933, to the late Clarence and Ruth (Jenkel) Remter. He graduated with the class of '52 at Appleton High School. On June 11, 1953, Bill was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Carol Bartz, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Appleton. The couple were blessed with three children: Mike, Sue and Laurie and celebrated their 63rd anniversary together prior to Carol's passing. Bill was in the military for over 21 years and developed many wonderful friendships along the way. Which took him and the family around the world serving his country. During that time, he received honors as the Distinguished Flying Cross, II Air Medals, A.F. Accommodation Medal, and A.F. Expedition Medal. After retiring from the Air Force, Bill worked for General Electric Apparatus shop in Menasha for 20 years. After retiring again, he became the "fix-it guy" at Stepping Stones Learning Center for an additional 20 years doing what he loved best and surrounding himself with all the children that knew him as "grandpa Bill". In his free time, he was a lifetime member, Post Commander and manager of the Appleton VFW 2778, and a member of the Appleton American Legion. Bill also devoted many hours & miles to the DAV transporting fellow veterans. Something dear to his heart was his woodworking shop where his specialty of making rocking horses and other projects gave him much enjoyment. He also loved spending time "up north" hunting in the woods, driving his mule around, and taking his biggest buck ever. Bill also had a love for music and enjoyed going to Pierce Park for the summer band concerts and also the performances at Xavier High School with his special friend, Judy. After a long day, he would settle down in his favorite recliner with his pup, Buddy. Bill enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Bill is survived by his 3 children: his son, Michael (Pam) Remter, Town of Buchanan; 2 daughters: Sue (Steve) Schmidt, Larsen and Laurie (Dennis) O'Dell, Greenville; 8 grandchildren: Eric Remter, Nick Schmidt, Jennifer Mocine, Courtney Smet, Drew Schmidt, Kristen Nickelatti, and Weston Schmidt; great grandchildren: Jacob, Joey, Josie, Aiden, Landen, Owen, Andrea, Lilyana, Emmett, Hailyn, Leni, Tyne, Bauer and Evan Jonathan; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim (Kay) Bartz; many nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, Judy Tonnell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; parents; a grandson ""Evan in Heaven"", and other extended but close family members.
A Funeral Service for Bill will be held at 4 PM on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel, 606 N Oneida St, Appleton with Rev. Nick Hatch officiating. Friends and relatives may visit at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 2 - 4 PM. Military Honors will be held after the service, performed by VFW Post #2778 of Appleton. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park, the following day, September 6, 2024, at 10 AM. Memorial donations will be made to Bill's most cherished organizations in his name.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the hospital staff at Theda Clark Medical Center (AMC), Appleton, and to everyone who shared all of your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
