William Rierson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Park Funeral Home & Crematory - St. Petersburg on Jan. 30, 2026.
William "Bill" Rierson passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2026, in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born on June 13, 1940, in Flushing, Michigan, the son of Rexford and Cora (Stevens) Rierson. Bill resided most of his life in Flint Township, Michigan, before moving to Plant City, Florida in 2023.

Bill gave his life to Christ at Trinity Assembly of God and continued worship at Davison Assembly of God in Michigan and Clearwater Victory Chapel in Florida.

He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1966 before returning home to Flushing to begin the next chapter of his life. It was there that he met the love of his life, Ina Miller.

Bill and Ina were married on February 4, 1967, and together they built a beautiful life and loving family. Bill spent six years as a police officer, but his proudest work was serving with the Flint Township Fire Department for 20 years, achieving the rank of Captain. He also earned the distinction of Firefighter of the Year in 1979.

Before his final retirement in 2004, Bill also spent 16 years as a tour bus driver for Seniors Unlimited, transporting thousands of passengers to every corner of the United States. He loved the open road and knew every shortcut and scenic route imaginable. His passion for driving lasted until his very last day on earth.

In 2024, Bill and Ina moved to St. Petersburg, Florida to be closer to family. Bill found community and purpose as an active member of the Norman McLeod American Legion Post 26 in Plant City, where he volunteered regularly and supported fellow veterans. His time with the Legion brought him joy and fulfillment-a reflection of his lifelong spirit of service.

Known as "the bear with a soft heart," Bill will be remembered for his unwavering love of God, family, and country; his devotion to serving others; his love of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions; and his steady, comforting presence that made everyone around him feel cared for.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Ina Rierson; daughter, Lori Jaques; son, Kevin (Diana) Rierson; and his beloved aunt, Doris Stevens. He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren-Zoey Ireton (Ryan), Zhane Rierson, Sariah Jaques, and Keona Ozuna-Jaques (Francisco)-as well as his four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons, who were the lights of his life. Bill also leaves behind many cherished lifelong friends and cousins. He was a proud husband, father, friend, grandfather, and father-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bill's honor to the "Norman McLeod Post No 26 American Legion" via Paypal. Donations can also be mailed to Norman McLeod Post No 26 American Legion, 2207 W. Baker St., Plant City, FL 33563.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, February 9, 2026, at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5750 49th St. N., St. Petersburg, Florida 33709. Pastor Albert Martinez officiating.

Friends and family are invited to gather from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. to greet the family. A service will follow from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with dinner immediately afterward.

Bill was dad´s (Barry Hoyt) cousin and he was such a nice guy! I will cherish the memories of him going up North and spending the weekend at my dad´s in Grayling Michigan playing cards and sharing stories.
My love and prayers go out to Ina and his kids and grandkids.
Give my dad and my brother a hug for me Bill. I will see you again.

I enjoyed the 2 trips we took down to see Aunt Doris. We would pass an area and he would say...if you turn down that road you will go to such and such a place. We would go a little farther and there would be another thing he would point out--it was like having my own tour guide along on the trip! I will miss his Saturday morning call--some just "Hello, we are all good, talk with you next week" and others telling me of the gatherings you all had, what the each of you were doing or what the grand kids or greats may have done, his Legion or church happenings. He liked to be active and liked people. He will be missed.
